My structured step-by-step course (available through my website) addresses these issues precisely. One tip: Think left and right hands together.

  3. BassLessonsOnline says:

Sure, just play one finger per fret.

@BassLessonsOnline aah okay then. can you give me some kind of an idea how you play the first 4 frets? (just by a simple explanation)

    Greets Thomas

  9. BassLessonsOnline says:

There are two ways of lowering the strings.
    1. The main adjustment is made on the bridge saddles.
    2. The other adjustment happens “automatically” when you tighten the truss rod (which is best left to someone knowledgeable).

Hello and thanks for providing some of your background and for your comment and queries.
Reading trombone bass clef is almost the same as bass bass clef. The difference is that the bass sounds an octave lower than notated. Therefore on bass you don’t have to read below the stave. Your background will be very beneficial for your progress on bass.
    Kind regards,
    George

  11. BassLessonsOnline says:

Good going – thanks for your comment and good luck with your further discoveries!

  12. BassLessonsOnline says:

Hello Thomas … and thanks for your comments and request.
I do not have such a video because I do not advocate using 4 fingers in the first 4 frets unless it is extremely useful and practical and will not lead to RSI problems.
    George

  13. slasher970 says:

Oh and also how do you lower the strings?

  14. slasher970 says:

I am a younger person and just got my bass yesterday i do play music but trombone is what i play. Does knowing alot about the bass cleft help when going into bass as a beginner? Thanks for these videos i am getting better at bass already:)

  17. BassLessonsOnline says:

Usually bass pedals are designed and made for an ideal frequency response with basses. Some guitar pedals are fine for bass. You must test for yourself, however.
    George

  18. Basstard22 says:

dear george, i really like this lesson cause i have some problems with my fingers to put on the frets.. but do you have a video which teaches you how to hold you fingers at the first 4 frets?

  25. AdamsVinyl says:

    lol, there are 123,123 views

  26. BassLessonsOnline says:

Thanks, I gotcha now. You can do both.

    1. You can stop on the note you are sliding to (as I demonstrate in the beginning exercise). Do this if you want to sustain the target note.

    or

    2. You can re-strike the target note (as I demonstrate from 3:25).

    Happy slidin!
    George

  27. MJD32Jaguars says:

ok what im saying is when you play a slide do you stop on a certain string like if it was a 1 fret do you slide to a 6 fret and stop on the fret or do you play the 6th fret as well so you would strum 1 slide 6 strum or strum 1 slide 6 stop is that how you do it?

  28. BassLessonsOnline says:

    I’m not sure if I understand ;-(

Please rephrase your query so I can give a “more informed” answer.

    Kind regards,
    George

  29. MJD32Jaguars says:

when you perform a slide say if its a 6 to 5 on the A string do you play the 5 string or its just 6 slide to the five stop if you understand what i’m saying

  30. BassLessonsOnline says:

    Essentially there is no difference.

A tip: Check out what your idols are using.

    George

  31. horserider101202 says:

is there a difference in bass guitar for differend music ime more interested in the rock kind of music

  32. marianaph17 says:

Do you know the name of the string but no using lise E A D G but with like LA SOL.. I play guitar but I use those names so If you know them it would be helpful to me thanks !

  33. BassLessonsOnline says:

Only videos 1-4 are sequential, plus my two slap bass videos. All of my other You Tube videos are by topic.

The only way to get real sequential, step-by-step lessons from me is via my course (available through my website).

    Kind regards,
    George

  34. marwood03 says:

Which video do I watch after Lesson 4 when you explain how to play route route 5 and so on?

    thanks

  35. BassLessonsOnline says:

Just so we don’t get high and low confused, the 4 thickest strings are the same as the 4 bass strings. The bass strings are one octave lower than the E A D G on guitar.

    George

  36. mrmetalnuno says:

is the highest string on a bass the lowest string on a guitar, just curious.

  37. BassLessonsOnline says:

The notes are C and its octave.

    George

  38. doubled334 says:

What notes were you playing for that last riff, the “very simple backwards slide”?

  39. JbHa82 says:

    1:40
not even doing it but thats alright dont even worry about it
its just one of my OCD things

  40. BassLessonsOnline says:

I assume you are touching the other strings with the undersides of your fingers. If that is the case (and it is the cause of the scratchy sound) then just make sure your fingers are sufficiently arched.

Check out this video again to view the technique.

    Good luck!
    George

  41. coffeecake917 says:

or its more like a scratchy sound.

  42. coffeecake917 says:

Hey, awesome lessons like ive said before. But i gota question, i know how to slide and all that stuff. but is there any way to avoid that kinda feedbacky sound when you slide that comes from your other strings? its kinda like..a shwang sound. lol idk. any way to avoid it?

  43. BassLessonsOnline says:

It may help to study guitar, but it is certainly not essential.

It is very helpful to study music theory, whether you play bass, piano, guitar, sax etc.

As a bass player, it is also very useful to “get in touch with” a chordal instrument such as piano and guitar.

If you are attracted to bass, then play bass; the other stuff will happen along the way.

    George

  44. Ciciupipiltin666 says:

hey george!! some people says that its better to study guitar before bass …. is that true?! :|

    Thanks :D
